Caramelized Onions

Sweet, golden, and irresistibly rich, these caramelized yellow onions are slowly cooked to perfection in butter until soft and jammy. Perfect as a topping for burgers, steaks, pizzas, or stirred into pastas and soups, they add a deep, savory-sweet flavor that transforms any dish.
Ingredients
  • 3 large yellow onions (thinly sliced)
  • 2 tbsp butter (or olive oil, or a mix)
  • 1 tsp salt

Optional: 1 tsp sugar (helps speed caramelization)

Optional: splash of balsamic vinegar or wine (for extra depth)

  1. Prep: Slice onions into thin half-moons.
  2. Heat pan: Place a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add butter or oil.
  3. Cook onions: Add onions and salt. Stir to coat evenly.
  4. Slow & steady: Cook for 30–40 minutes, stirring every few minutes. Don’t rush—low heat brings out the natural sugars.
  5. Optional boost: If they look dry, add 1–2 tbsp water. For deeper flavor, add sugar, balsamic, or wine during the last 10 minutes.
  6. Finish: Onions should turn deep golden brown, soft, and jammy.

Uses: Burgers, steaks, pizzas, grilled cheese, pastas, or as a topping for roasted veggies.
