Did you know that February is the month when Florida citrus crops are at their peak? It’s time to stock up on those sweet tangerines, tangy grapefruits, and how about some beautiful blood oranges for a healthy Valentine’s Day twist?
Winter greens include crispy cabbage which is great in Asian dishes and soup. Don’t forget the little cabbages! Have you ever tried roasting Brussel sprouts or sautéing them with pancetta? Yum! Kale and your lettuces from butter to romaine and iceberg are all in season in Florida during the month of February too. So get your salad on!
Plus, complement your dishes with in-season February leeks and mushrooms. Potatoes of all types – from sweets, to yellow and those hearty russets which pair so well with a juicy steak – are also February produce favs.
Squash is another winter produce favorite; and if you like spaghetti, why not warm your belly the healthy way by making a big pot of spaghetti squash with fresh basil, garlic and olive oil or homemade red sauce?
February is also a great month for pepper and eggplant harvests. So, if you like stuffed peppers or eggplant parm, you are definitely in luck!
How do you feel about strawberry shortcake or fresh, sweet, sliced strawberries and cream? Well, here is something you may not know…’tis the season for strawberries here in Florida too!
How about some more good news? All your favorite in-season fruits and vegetables can be found February and every other month of the year at Perrine’s Produce, conveniently located in New Smyrna Beach, Port Orange and Ormond Beach.
